FAQ
Questions from the jump seat (and the kitchen table)
CrewParent Live helps a crew family answer one question: where are you, and when can we talk? Below are the questions we hear most from pilots, flight attendants and the people who miss them. Every answer explains how the app thinks, not just what it shows.
Getting started
What is CrewParent Live?
It's a shared trip view for airline crew and their families. The crew member's schedule becomes a simple picture at home: where they are, when they land, and when it's a good time to call.
Who is "crew" and who is "family"?
Crew is the pilot or flight attendant whose schedule powers the app. Family is everyone who follows along: a spouse, kids, parents, a best friend. Family members join with a share code from the crew member, or by reading the crew member's calendar on their own iPhone.
Does my family need their own subscription?
Not if they're in your Apple Family Sharing group and you have a Family plan. New followers outside that group need their own plan to see your trips. See Plans & billing below.
Do I have to type in every trip?
No. The app reads your schedule from your calendar. You can also add a trip by hand when something changes last minute.
"Can I call now?" — availability & alerts
What does "Available" mean?
It means the crew member has landed, reached the gate, and has some breathing room before the next flight. It's our best guess at a good time to call, not a promise they're off the airplane.
When does the Available alert go out?
About 15 minutes after the "at the gate" alert. That gives crew time to finish shutdown, grab bags and turn their phone on.
Why didn't I get an Available alert after a landing?
If the next flight leaves within 90 minutes, we skip it. A quick turn is busy: paperwork, walkaround, boarding. We'd rather stay quiet than send you a "call now" that can't be answered. It's also skipped if you turned it off for that crew member, or if the "at the gate" alert didn't come through.
Why it works this way: a missed call during a tight turn is worse than no alert at all.
What alerts can family get?
| Alert | When it arrives |
|---|---|
| Takeoff | When the flight leaves the ground |
| Approaching | About 15 minutes before landing |
| Wheels down | Shortly after touchdown |
| At the gate | When the airplane reaches the gate |
| Available | About 15 min after gate arrival, if there's time before the next flight |
Timing depends on flight data from the airline and tracking sources, so alerts can land a few minutes early or late.
What does Flight Progress control?
Flight Progress controls the flight alerts your family gets about you: pushback, takeoff, approach, landing and arrival at the gate, plus cancellations, diversions and holding. Crew don't get these alerts about their own flights.
Can I turn the Available alert off?
Yes. Open Settings → Notifications & Availability, pick the crew member, and turn off "Is [name] Available?". The other alerts stay on.
I got an alert, but now it's gone. Did it fail?
No. Tapping a notification opens the app and clears it from your lock screen. That's normal iPhone behavior.
Commuting & getting home
My spouse commutes to base. How does the app figure out when they'll be home?
When the last working flight reaches the gate, the app looks for a flight from where the trip ends to the home airport. It picks the first realistic option and estimates a home time from it.
What counts as "realistic"?
- 45-minute rule: the commute flight must leave at least 45 minutes after the last working flight reaches the gate. Crew need time to wrap up, walk the terminal and get through to the next gate.
- 24-hour window: we search flights up to 24 hours after that gate arrival. Late-night arrivals often commute home the next morning.
- About a day ahead: we start looking for commute flights about a day before the trip ends.
- 25 minutes to leave the airport: after the last flight reaches the gate, we allow 25 minutes to get from the gate to the curb.
Does the app know if they get bumped off the commute flight?
Not directly. The app can't see standby lists, so the estimate assumes the commute flight they planned.
Can I see when they'll be home?
Getting Home shows an estimated time home, based on the last working flight, any commute flight and the Apple Maps drive time from the airport. It's an estimate and can change with delays.
Trips & syncing
What do the trip labels mean?
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| On a trip | The trip has started, but its full details haven't been shared yet |
| Heading home | The last working flight is done; commute or drive is next |
| Trip complete | The trip is finished |
| Next trip | A summary of the next scheduled trip, once the current one ends |
The trip ended but my screen still shows it. Why?
On family phones a finished trip stays until the crew member is expected home, then the next trip shows. On the crew member's phone it stays until the end of that day.
My flight was delayed. Will the app drop the trip too early?
No. The trip stays on screen until the delayed flight actually lands.
Why does family only see a summary of the next trip?
Full details are shared for the current trip. The next trip appears in full once the crew member's phone opens the app and switches over.
Why it works this way: schedules change constantly. Sharing one trip at a time keeps family looking at the trip that's really happening.
What does "Up to date" mean?
It means your phone has the latest information the crew member has shared. If the crew member hasn't opened the app since their schedule changed, family won't see that change yet.
Crew tip: opening the app after a schedule change, a reassignment or the end of a trip is the surest way to share it with everyone following you. The app also tries to update in the background.
Where do I find…? A quick Settings tour
| I want to… | Go to |
|---|---|
| Turn alerts on or off | Settings → Notifications & Availability |
| Connect or change my calendar | Settings → Calendar |
| Share my trips with family (crew) | Settings → Crews → Share With Family |
| See or remove my followers (crew) | Settings → Crews → Followers |
| Manage my plan or redeem a code | Settings → Crew Household |
| Restore a purchase on a new phone | Settings → Crew Household → Restore Purchases |
| Turn Crew Nearby on or off | Settings → Notifications & Availability → Crew Nearby (crew only, off until you turn it on) |
| Delete my account | Settings → Account → Delete Account |
What's Crew Nearby?
Crew only. When you and a crew member you follow both turn it on, you'll get a heads-up when you're on layover at the same airport or hotel. Both of you need Crew Household.
Are there widgets?
Yes. Add a CrewParent Live widget to your Home Screen or Lock Screen to see one crew member's trip status at a glance. If your car supports CarPlay widgets, your CrewParent Live widgets show there too and update the same way they do on your phone.
Accounts & sign-in
The golden rule: sign in the same way every time. Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google create two separate accounts. If you switch methods, you'll land in a brand-new, empty account with no trips or followers. Don't buy your plan again — tap Restore Purchases in Settings → Crew Household instead.
I got a new phone. What do I do?
Install the app and sign in with the same method you used before. Your trips, followers and plan come with you. If your plan doesn't show up, tap Restore Purchases in Settings → Crew Household.
My followers can't see me and my plan is missing. What happened?
You've probably signed in with a different method than before. Sign out, then sign back in the way you first did. Don't buy the plan again: it belongs to your Apple ID. Tap Restore Purchases in Settings → Crew Household instead.
Can't remember how you first signed in?
Email support@crewparent.live and we'll help you find your original account.
Followers & sharing
How does someone follow me?
- In Settings → Crews, tap Share With Family to get a code.
- Send it to your family member.
- They enter it in their app.
- You approve them. Nobody follows you without your OK.
Can I remove a follower?
Yes, any time, from Settings → Crews → Followers. Your trips are removed from their phone and they see "[Your name] is no longer sharing trips with you."
I removed someone by mistake. Can I add them back?
Yes. Send them a new share code and approve them again. It works just like the first time.
Can I be "Mom" instead of my name?
Two ways. The crew member can choose how they appear, like Mom or Dad. A follower can also give them a private nickname that only the follower sees.
Can grandparents in another state follow along?
Yes. Anyone you approve can follow, wherever they live.
Getting your schedule in
How does my schedule get into the app?
There are three ways, and the app only reads your schedule. It never changes anything in your calendar.
| Way | Best for |
|---|---|
| Apple Calendar | Any crew whose schedule already syncs to their iPhone calendar |
| Upload a calendar file (.ics) | United and Delta crews who export one |
| Add a trip by hand | Last-minute changes, or anything the calendar missed |
Which works for my airline?
United and Delta crews can use Apple Calendar or upload a calendar file. American and Southwest crews use Apple Calendar. Anyone can add a trip by hand.
Can a family member get the schedule for me?
Yes. A family member can upload a calendar file you send them, or read your calendar on their own iPhone.
My schedule changed. Do I need to re-upload?
If you use Apple Calendar, just open the app after the change. If you upload files, upload the new one.
Plans & billing
What plans are there?
Crew Household comes in two plans, Individual and Family, each billed monthly or yearly. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
What does Family cover?
Everyone in your Apple Family Sharing group gets Crew Household with one purchase.
I have a code. Where do I use it?
Settings → Crew Household → Redeem Code.
I bought a plan but the app doesn't show it.
Your plan belongs to your Apple ID. First check that you signed in the same way as before (see Accounts & sign-in). Then tap Restore Purchases in Settings → Crew Household.
How do I cancel?
Plans are billed by Apple. Cancel anytime in your iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or in Settings → Crew Household → Manage Subscription. Deleting the app does not cancel the plan.
Privacy
What does CrewParent Live keep from my schedule?
Only what family needs: your flights and your hotels. We don't store crew member names, employee numbers or your schedule notes.
Can my airline see what I share?
No. CrewParent Live is an independent app and isn't affiliated with any airline.
Who can see my trips?
Only the followers you've approved. You can remove anyone at any time, and their copy is wiped.
How do I delete everything?
Settings → Account → Delete Account removes your account and its data. Cancel any plan with Apple separately.
